Music Lyrics
this washing machine could of killed me
with the house up in flames
as i sleep in my own bed
with the downstairs in flames
so please take this back under warranty
cause this machine is grilled
so il contact these bastards
as they had my life at risk
the man was named careless, he said it was fine
he said it was fine
he said it was fine!
the man, careless was trying his best
he's trying his best
the best from the rest!
this guy, was the man on the phone
he sounded relaxed
he sounded all fine
when im hoping for a new machine
to make my life safe from this technology
but i remember when we first got it
i was like i dont care
with the joy on face
i could see that you did
but the machine could of killed me
with the smoke from its mouth
now i would clearly like to say
is that, i survived a night with a washing machine
*chorus*
im sick of this!
this machines too loud!
as it sounds like a areoplane
im sick of this
im sick of this
im sick of this
im sick of this.
with the house up in flames
as i sleep in my own bed

Music Video Analysis

This video opens up with close ups of the band members playing their instruments, in a dark what seems to be an open space and they are lit up upon it. amplifying a sombre mood within the song. the video consists of a lot of meat shots of the band, promoting them, it also has a lot of medium and long shots of the whole band or one individual. The camera fades in and out of focus when the singer starts, emphasising the focus on him as the focal point of the band whilst cutting into short shots of the other band members, showing that in terms of selling the band they are less significant than the singer.
this video conforms with other videos you would expect to see within this genre, as it shows a kind of stage performance of the band which you would expect to see in this metal/hardcore genre. This shows what the band would be like live, so it sells themselves even more and would perhaps make people want to see them live, due to how much energy and effort they put in to this performance.
The video does conform with Andrew Goodwin's theory of music videos, as there is a lot of meat shots of the lead singer, who again is the focal point of the video, who people are most looking forward to see, however it does contrast to another point of Goodwin's theory as with there being no women involved in the video there is no aspect of voyeurism of females.

Music Video Analysis

The music video I am analysing is Funeral For a Friend, Roses for the Dead.
The camera in the video usually shows straightforward shots consisting of mainly medium shots and close ups, of the teenager walking through a city. From the various shots showing different people the teenager see's, you can tell that the teenager isn't liked and has little or no friends, as everyone shuns him. The camera turns focal points to a woman, who is going into what looks like her sons bedroom, just looking at things, as the video laters shows it is about teenage suicide, the teenager is walking through the city to jump off a building, but the video shows him visiting places where he went when he was younger, taking him back to a happy time, indicating that he isn't happy now. the shots with his mother do the same, she looks at her sons old possessions, and also remembering a time when he and she used to be happy.
This video dosen't really conform with other music videos of this genre, as usually you would see the band playing but the band have opted for a serious story to the video, not just flickering through shots of the different band members.
The images that are shown reflect the lyrics as the video is telling the story of a teenager committing suicide, with some of the lyrics being
"It's not your fault
You feel okay,
It's too late in the day
It's not your fault,
You feel betrayed,
And can't come out to play"
These words can be some of the feeling someone might feels when feeling s depressed and suicidal thus amplifying the lyrics through the use of the visuals. The tone of the music matches the visuals as the song isn't exactly a happy tune, connecting with the unhappy, thought provoking theme of the visuals.
Contrary to Andrew Goodwin's theory of music videos there is no meat shots lead singer of the band, however there is some close ups on the teenagers face and his mothers face, showing the seriousness of the video and the need for the band not be in it.
there is no voyeurism of females in the video, this is again contrary to Goodwin's music video theory as he states that women are objectified in music videos, whereas there is a women in the video she is not objectified, she is shown as a strong female individual.
the only intertextual reference in the video are posters in the teenagers room, the posters in the room are Funeral For a Friend album artwork posters, reminding the viewers that it is their video, and what album it is from so people may think to go out and buy it

Shot Count
This music video consisted of 96 different shots, this is a large amount of shots which means that the editing is faster and the shots are on for less time. This backs up the pace and the tempo of the song. The majority of the shots used are medium long shots of the band and their fans. A lot of the shots are images of the band 'crowd surfing'. This is linked to music in this genre and their live performances. The clothing in this music video worn by both the band and the audience and very stereotypical of a band within this music genre, this adds more of a mood to the dark video. The video is also shot in a dark warehouse meaning it adds more of a gloomy feel to the song. This is a main convention in most of the music videos within this genre.

Music Video Analysis
Right at the begining of this video there is a close up shot of a guitar, straight away this meets one of the stereotypical conventions of a rock music video. The lighting in the video is low wich could add to the tempo of the song being calming and slow. Together the visual and the audio work together to create a more relaxed mood to the song. The video seems to be located in a room in an apartment, this is not a stereotypical scene for a music video of this genre as they are usually set on stage or in a rural location. There are alot of close up shots in this video of both the instruments and the band themselves. This could be to introduce the bands appearance to the listener. We can see from these shots that the band are wearing clothes that would be expected by this genre and that their style is similar to others of that music, for example their hair is longer. The lighting in this video is very low, again i feel that this is to add a mood to the song and to help support the audio. Also this message is given by the lyrics, 'There are ghosts in the walls and they crawl in your head through your ears' this makes us think that the song is negative and picking out on the darker points. The camera shots throughout the song are mainly close up shots showed for a relatively long time making the editing and shot changle less frequent i believe that this is to match the tempo of the song and the lyrics.
Music Video Analysis
This video opens with a projection of the drummer, the colours in the projection add to the mood and feeling of the intro to the song. The projection is shot in a backstreet, this could show us something about the band and the mood they are trying to set to the listener. The next shot is also a projection of the main singer. The lighting in this shot is flicking this adds an effect to the video making it look like a projected film. Throughout the video we see various members of the band playing musical instruments, this fits in with the genre of the song. These clips are all projected onto various objects and locations that could relate to the band and their music.
This song gives off a calming vibe, this is backed up by the long camera shots and the calming effect of the projection, this works well in contrast with the rural and run down areas that they are being projected on meaning that the two visual aspects contradict one another. During these projections we can see members of the band, here we see stereotypical clothing that we would expect to see on these types of bands. We also see the band members playing instruments, again this is one of the main conventions of a rock song. When the music becomes heavier and the singer comes above the other vocals the lights in the projection become more frequent almost like a strobe light, this backs up the music and helps the video support the song genre. Throughout the video there are various colours that are used and flashed on the projection to match the drumbeat. for example when the song starts colours in the video become clear and the projections become more blurred and sepia.

Music Video Analysis
This music video consists of many camera shots such as close ups and medium long shots. I believe that the long shot is used so that we can see the environment they are in which is on stage, this also allows us to see the costumes. There is a large variety of shot types to make the video more exciting at parts of the video the video becomes blurry this is to fade into the video and to add an effect to support the music at the beginning as the intro is more relaxed and has a more calming vibe. The whole video is shot in black and white, i believe that this adds a more dramatic and melancholy mood to the song to back up the audio. The video is very high in contrast i think that this adds a strong look to the image and this works well with the powerful music. When the tempo of the song increases so does the speed in shot changes. The images become more blurred and the lights in the shot start to flash more again to support the build up of the song. Also the lights used in the video are very strong, this works well with the dark surroundings and makes the band look almost like shadows or silhouettes.
The video shows the main conventions of this genre, Post hardcore. The main image in the video is the band itself playing in front of a crowd. The setting they are playing is dar that adds a mood to the video. The clothing of the band and of those in the audience are very stereotypical and all seem to follow the dark colour scheme of the video. In the video we see shots of people playing musical instruments, again this is an example of a stereotypical convention. Looking at the lyrics for this song i think that they give out a negative feeling, this is matched by the dark and gloomy feel to the video. lyrics such as 'I'm only 19 years but theres so much pain in here.'
The camera work at the beginning of the music video are longer and smoother then when the music gets faster the shots become more frequent and shorter. The change in camera change is indicated by the singers voice meaning when he starts singing the editing changes. I believe that this is to show the feel of the song and the meaning behind it.
This music video consists of many close up shots of the band, these are called meet shots and show who the band are.

OPIE Self Portrait
during this task i have improved my photoshop skills by editing parts of my body to create a cartoon-like character, i used the magnetic lasso tool to select different parts of the image and then used the fill and colour picker tool to change the detailed image to a more block colored piece. a major piece of this task was to use layers to select different parts of the image
